Slow-growing but richly rewarding, ‘aristocratic’ and ‘keenly anticipated‘ is how the Royal Horticultural Society describes the Peony.
When The Vale Living’s art group created their interpretations of these much-loved, summer blooms, there was indeed a little time to wait until the lush, softly textured petals began to emerge.
There was a range of artistic styles – from impressionism, capturing the effects of the light and the fleeting nature of the flowers, to realism, producing a more accurate representation with as much concentration on the light reflecting from the vase as on the flowers themselves.
As ever, our class was chatty, joyful with much laughter but also produced some inspiring interpretations of the peonies.
Building on the skills they have developed over recent months, our artists used acrylic paints, which they mixed and layered, to obtain just the right hues of pink and peach, nestled against the green petals and housed in a glittering, glass vase.
