Artists in Residence

The Vale’s art group has completed the fourth in its series of preparing artwork for the forthcoming Streatham Festival.

Getting to grips with the medium of acrylics on canvas, our artists focused on their interpretations of local landscapes, Streatham Common and The Rookery.

“They are getting quite accomplished,” said tutor, Di.

“The aim of this session was to learn how to make the finished painting look good and not worry too much about how closely it resembles what they are drawing.”  Many famous artists have followed this interpretive route – think Picasso, Dali, Matisse, Monet, Magritte and Warhol.

Whilst painting, there was a great deal of chatter from the group about what art classes at school were like – nothing like this, they agreed. One newcomer to the group got stuck in and thoroughly enjoyed herself and ‘au fait’ with artistic techniques, she resolved to bring her palette knife next time to perfect the finish she was after.
