Gordon’s Day

It is just over six months since Gordon Gellatly joined The Vale as our in-house chef. During that time, he has become a firm favourite with residents, their relatives and friends.

Many will know that during his long career, Gordon has developed and cooked a wide variety of menus for high end dining establishments. Yet, he doesn’t always get to sample all the delights he creates as Gordon remains a committed vegan. Indeed, his healthy outlook on life doesn’t just apply to his diet.

Gordon’s day begins early with a light, fruit-based snack before he heads off to Tooting Bec Lido which, for the unenlightened, is open air. Here, he aims to swim a mile a day, even in the coldest weather.

Then, he says his daily mantra

“Today is going to be a good day

Today is going to be a success

I aim to be the best person I can be for this day.”

A vegan breakfast follows before heading off to collect breakfast and lunch supplies for The Vale.

Installed back in his most familiar environment – the kitchen, he tries out new menu ideas before taking breakfast orders and preparing them to residents’ requirements.

No sooner is breakfast prepared and served, it is time to turn his attention to lunch for the day.

Sunday is a special and particularly busy day when residents and their families get together to enjoy one of his Sunday roasts or other meal choices. “Meal times are when I get to catch up with the people who live here – and it is a part of the job I really enjoy,” Gordon says. “Over the months, I’ve got to know some of the families who visit and I’m on first name terms with residents and some of their guests. It is really nice when they stop by to say ‘hi’ and makes the job extra special.”

During his free time, Gordon sticks to his healthy lifestyle. You will often find him walking the Thames Path between Barnes and Richmond. Then it is home for an evening meal – vegan, of course.
