Name that tune

This week saw the return to The Vale of the Streatham Seniors after the summer holidays. They joined ‘The Valees’ for the latest in our series of lunchtime quizzes. This has become a real community affair with the local curate, Ben Vertannes, from St Peter’s Church in attendance, along with John Browne from the Streatham Historical Society.

The quiz kicked off with a seasonal theme testing the participants’ knowledge of nature, including: Which species of bird is known for its autumn song? (Robin) and for the literati: What is the title of the John Keats’ poem that begins ‘Season of mists and mellow fruitfulness’ (To Autumn).

A round featuring songs from popular musicals was a real hit with ‘The Valees’ as many of them are fans. Several had recently made the trip to town to see My Fair Lady. They also cited Guys and Dolls and Mary Poppins as among their favourites. Consequently, they did well in identifying tunes from: The Wizard of Oz, Phantom of the Opera, Mary Poppins, Cats, Joseph and his Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat, Porgy and Bess and Westside Story.

Surprisingly, ‘Sit Down You’re Rocking the Boat’ proved tricky even though it is from Guys and Dolls.

The questions and answers prompted a lively discussion which continued over a very enjoyable and delicious lunch in the Bar & Bistro.
