Resident Artists Channel Cezanne

Paul Cezanne, one of the leading post-Impressionist artists, was the inspiration for the latest in The Vale’s series of creative art classes, led by Marina Beard.

With some of Cezanne’s work currently on show at Tate Modern, our eager students attempted to follow his lead with their own still life creations featuring apples, oranges and a vase of flowers.

Like their French muse, they experimented, in pastels, with colour and shape, light and shadow to highlight the rich shades of the fruit against the textured linen fabric.

It is fair to say that the results exceeded everyone’s expectations. In addition, participants all agreed that the art classes are therapeutic, of course, having a social chat over a cup of coffee afterwards, helps enormously.
