Stretch into Spring

The latest in our regular fitness sessions here at The Vale put the spotlight on stretching exercises. These are especially important in older people because, as we age, there is a decrease in the elasticity of our muscles, leading to stiffness. This, in turn, can lead to a decline in movement and balance which can result in a higher incidence of falls.

Even when seated there are benefits to be had from stretching. With some music to accompany their efforts, our participants were encouraged to gently twist at the waist, raise arms and legs, flex feet and bend sideways.

Stretching helps improve posture, increases blood flow and energy levels and can help reduce lower back pain.

Suitably refreshed and mobilised, residents agreed they felt more energised to face the rest of the day.
