Art Class

Time to be Still

The members of the art group at The Vale have now become quite proficient and confident in their skills. They take new challenges in their stride, refusing to be intimidated.

Having recently studied and adopted the Impressionist style, it was now time to move forward a few years. Next up are the Fauvists. Henri Matisse, in his early career, was the flag bearer for this artistic style with its bold colours, textured surfaces and non-naturalistic approach.

Our group took on a still life composition featuring a table with some bowls of fruit and a glass bottle. This subject was undertaken with great aplomb. Some adopted Matisse’s abstract approach, others a more realistic interpretation.

As always, there was much chatter, laughter and comparison of techniques. “It was very entertaining and enjoyable and it breaks up the day,” said one participant.

With a cup of tea or coffee to help things along, what better way to spend time together and create a fruity masterpiece?
