Van Gogh’s Autumn Colours

The Valees art group returned to the theme of Vincent Van Gogh for their latest master class.

They had previously studied the Sunflowers series but this time, they focused their attention on autumnal trees on Streatham Common, which Van Gogh reputedly sketched when he lived in Brixton. Next year will see the 150thanniversary of his time there. Sadly, the sketch, drawn on the title page of a book of poetry by Edmond Roche in April 1875, has been lost so it fell to The Vale’s artists to recreate the scene.

Our participants really enjoyed learning new techniques which included sponging to create the Autumn leaves. Cups of coffee and lots of chatter were also a feature of the session. The results, however, were impressive and will be displayed at a private viewing on 24 November.
