The Library

A Quiet Read

As the summer progresses, the attraction of sitting comfortably with a good book becomes ever more appealing.

Residents at The Vale Living have the option of our Library, or indeed some welcome shade on the Bar & Bistro’s patio, to enjoy a few chapters. They might even seek out some company to exchange book recommendations over a coffee.

So what’s on this summer’s reading list? Topping the best selling paperback fiction at the moment is ‘My Husband’s Wife’ by Alice Feeny. A young woman sets out for a morning run but returns home to find everything has changed. Her key doesn’t even fit her front door any longer. A web of mystery, deceit and obsession unfurls. Nothing is at it seems and it keeps you guessing until the end.

Also near the top of the list are ‘The Correspondent’ by Virginia Evans, a tale of an irascible 70 year-old woman who conducts her most intimate relationship through letters,  and ‘The Secret of Secrets’, the latest mystery thriller by the ever-popular, Dan Brown.

Non-fiction buffs might be drawn to Arundhati Roy’s ‘Mother Mary Comes to Me’. It explores the author’s complex relationship with her mother, from whom she fled at the age of 18.

Classicists could take advantage of the popularity of ‘The Odyssey’, thanks to Christopher Nolan’s summer blockbuster film. Emily Wilson’s acclaimed translation has climbed the bestseller charts and probably one of the most accessible and engaging version of Homer’s epic.

So why not take it easy, put your feet up and lose yourself in a captivating book.
